Marine microplastics, tiny fragments of plastic found in water and sediment, are recognized as a growing threat to the environment. During this two-day Coastal Stewards program, you will hear about current microplastics research in Georgia from Skidaway Institute of Oceanography graduate student, Kun Ma, who is studying the breakdown rates of plastic microfibers in marine and estuarine environments. Marine educators at the UGA Aquarium will lead hands-on activities that involve collecting water samples from the Skidaway River and analyzing those samples for the presence of microplastics. This type of real-world application allows for a deeper understanding and awareness of how your daily actions may impact the important and fragile ecosystems along the Georgia coast.

Day 1: April 3, 5:30 – 8 p.m.
Day 2: April 4, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Registration is required. Register here by March 27

The Coastal Stewards program is a series of environmental education workshops targeted to adults living on or visiting the Georgia coast. The goal of the program is to engage adults in activities designed to improve their knowledge of coastal ecosystems, enhance understanding of current issues impacting coastal communities, and inspire stewardship of natural resources. Each workshop contains a mixture of lecture, lab and field activities using scientific and recreational equipment.
