Research Webinar: A Performance Comparison Between Two Clam Species

July 30, 2024, 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Justin Manley, hatchery manager at Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant’s Shellfish Research Laboratory, will be presenting research outcomes of a NOAA Saltonstall-Kennedy grant-funded project, “Strengthening the Georgia Hard Clam Industry through expansion into southern quahog, Mercenaria campechiensis, mariculture.” The talk will share results of performance data collected from northern and southern hard clams farmed at three intertidal field sites located in McIntosh County, Georgia.

This research was conducted in an effort to determine the viability of implementing the use of Southern quahogs (Mercenaria campechiensis) in clam farming operations within the state to help increase clam harvest yields during the warmer months of the year. This research webinar is targeted towards regulatory authorities and existing or potential small business owners interested in, or actively engaged in, clam farming in the South Atlantic Bight.
