Saltwater Science Series: Phytoplankton

September 19, 2025, 10:00 am - 11:30 am

| $15

Join Sea Grant-funded researcher Mallory Mintz from UGA’s Cohen Lab for an interactive exploration of phytoplankton—the tiny drifters that sustain oysters, fish, and much more. Learn how phytoplankton shape marine environments, how harmful algal blooms form, and the impacts these blooms can have on local ecosystems.

This program takes place at the UGA Aquarium on Skidaway Island, where Mallory will present her work as a Sea Grant Research Trainee. After the presentation, we’ll then head down to the river for hands-on fieldwork, collecting water samples and using a variety of instruments to assess water quality. Then, we’ll head back indoors to observe and identify the sample up close under the microscope.

Registration is required (unless child is 2 or under) and includes admission to the UGA Aquarium. This program was created with older kids and adults in mind, but children under 18 are welcome. All children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Tickets are nonrefundable.
