SUMMARY:From Farm to Reef: Oyster Aquaculture and Restoration
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a morning of exploration on Georgia’s oyster aquaculture efforts! The morning begins with a guided tour of the UGA Shellfish Research Lab\, where you will witness the bustling process of spawning and growing oyster seed for local farmers. Next\, travel by boat with researchers from the UGA Shellfish Research Lab and marine educators from the UGA Aquarium to learn about oyster farms in the Bull River mariculture zone and oyster reef restoration. Along the way\, experts will share insights into the vital role oyster reefs play in improving water quality\, providing habitat\, and mitigating coastal erosion. \n\n\n\nRegistration is required and includes admission to the UGA Aquarium. Children ages 10 and up are welcome but must be accompanied by a registered adult. Tickets are nonrefundable.  \n\n\n\nSpecial Notes: \n\n\n\n\nAll boat activities are weather-dependent and require appropriate and adequate footwear and clothing.\n\n\n\n\n\nUGA boat captains reserve the right to cancel boat programs in the event of unsafe weather conditions. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMake a difference during Seafood Month by joining staff from our Shellfish Research Lab to bag recycled oyster shells that’ll be used to create new oyster reefs along our coast. \n\n\n\nReturning oyster shell to our estuaries allows for new oysters to settle and grow\, creating thriving reefs that provide habitat for a variety of organisms\, including popular recreational and commercial fish species. Oyster reefs also help stabilize shorelines and improve water quality by filtering pollutants. \n\n\n\nPlease note: Shell bagging is a strenuous activity involving shoveling\, repetitive bending down\, and other physical activity. Volunteers must be 18 years or older to participate. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet into the Halloween spirit by joining educators on a Halloween Estuary Trawl! Climb aboard our 43-foot trawler\, the R/V Sea Dawg\, for a memorable scientific collection trip. Sample the bottom communities found in tidal rivers and sounds\, then identify\, sort\, count and record species and environmental data. \n\n\n\nYou never know what’s lurking under the surface. We may catch sharks\, rays or burrfish! Educators will provide information about the natural history\, diversity and ecological significance of animals collected during the trawl. \n\n\n\nThis program also introduces Trawl to Trash\, an initiative aimed at preventing marine debris from entering coastal ecosystems. Participants will learn about the negative impacts of marine debris on wildlife and habitats and explore the use of Trawl to Trash bags\, created from recycled shrimp nets\, to collect and remove debris. Each participant will have the opportunity to construct their own bag to take home and use for collecting trash along Georgia’s coast. \n\n\n\nRegistration is required and includes admission to the UGA aquarium. Children ages 10 and up are welcome but must be accompanied by a registered adult. SUMMARY:Discovering Your Backyard Marsh
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGeorgia has an estimated 378\,000 acres of salt marsh\, one of the most extensive and productive habitats of its type in the U.S. that serve as the primary nursery for many species of fish\, crabs\, shrimps\, and the birds that feed on them. The salt marsh provides storm protection\, opportunities for recreation and improves water quality\, but is also under threat due to sea level rise. \n\n\n\nThe South Atlantic Salt Marsh Initiative brings together partners from North Carolina to Florida to identify strategies for sustaining one million acres of salt marsh across the four-state region\, with Georgia’s marshes at its heart. \n\n\n\nJoin Michelle Covi\, marsh ecologist and chair of the SASMI Partnership Council\, to learn more about the salt marsh in our own backyard and the work underway to protect and restore this vital habitat. \n\n\n\nThis program takes place at the UGA Aquarium on Skidaway Island\, where we’ll begin with an overview of the South Atlantic Salt Marsh Initiative. After the presentation\, we’ll head out to the Jay Wolf Nature Trail to discover the marsh up close\, viewing the plant and animal inhabitants that make up this ecosystem. Bring clothes and shoes that can get muddy\, along with your sense of wonder and adventure! \n\n\n\nRegistration is required for participants ages 3 and up and includes admission to the UGA Aquarium. In this program\, participants will be introduced to insect and invertebrate research\, including the scientific method of insect pinning. \n\n\n\nYou’ll meet Abbey Crossman\, a coastal ecology researcher with Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant\, who studies invertebrates and their vital role in healthy ecosystems. Through real examples from her fieldwork\, you’ll learn how scientists observe\, collect\, and study everyday insects like beetles\, butterflies and grasshoppers. \n\n\n\nParticipants will take part in a guided insect pinning demonstration using paper models\, creating their own museum-style insect displays to take home. \n\n\n\nAll supplies for the craft will be provided. \n\n\n\nRegistration is required. DESCRIPTION:Every Friday\, guests can witness mealtime in the aquarium as marine educators feed a variety of animals. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the tenth annual Oyster Roast for a Reason\, a fundraising event hosted by Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant. The event will take place on Saturday\, Nov. 21\, from 1-4 p.m. on the bluff next to the UGA Aquarium on Skidaway Island\, Georgia. Guests will enjoy live music and can eat locally harvested Georgia oysters. Registration coming soon!

SUMMARY:Behind-the-Scenes Aquarium Tours
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEver wondered what goes on behind the scenes at the UGA Aquarium? You’re in luck! Spend the afternoon exploring our exhibits before learning what it’s like to care for our ambassador animals during tours led by aquarium staff. Participants will gain access to areas not typically open to the public. Animal feeding might also be part of the tour.     \n\n\n\nRegistration is required for all participants ages 3 and up and includes admission to the UGA Aquarium. All ages are welcome\, but children under 18 must be accompanied by a registered adult. Strollers are not permitted in the back of the aquarium but can be stored in the lobby during the program. Tickets are non-refundable. Behind-the-scenes tours are offered every Wednesday in June and July.  \n\n\n\nQuestions? Contact Cindy Lingebach at calingeb@uga.edu or call 912-598-2344
