DESCRIPTION:Chatham County students are out of school\, and it’s a perfect time to get the family together for a hands-on fish dissection! Learn about fish biology\, ecology and anatomy as you explore the inner workings of these aquatic creatures. Each participant will be provided with a fish for dissection\, offering a unique\, up-close learning experience. \n\n\n\nAges 5 and older are welcome\, but children under 18 must be accompanied by a registered adult. Closed toe shoes are needed for this event. Registration is required and includes admission to the UGA Aquarium. Tickets are nonrefundable.

SUMMARY:Bloomwatch Tybee: Monitoring Plants and Pollinator
DESCRIPTION:Join Sea Grant–funded researchers from Georgia Southern University for an engaging exploration of Tybee Island. Learn about plants and pollinators\, the role of native bees in coastal ecosystems\, and how climate and human activity influence these vital ecosystem processes. \n\n\n\nThe program begins at Jaycee Park (adjacent to Tybee Island Guard House)\, where researchers will introduce plant–pollinator relationships with live and preserved specimens. Participants will then explore the island’s native and landscaped plants through guided\, field-based learning. Using a variety of field research techniques and the iNaturalist mobile app\, participants will observe Tybee’s plants and learn how to monitor their responses to human activity. \n\n\n\nThis beginner-friendly program is designed for participants ages 15 and up\, with no prior experience needed. The program is free\, but registration is required to hold your spot. All ages are welcome\, but children under 18 must be accompanied by a registered adult. \n\n\n\nQuestions? Spend the afternoon exploring our exhibits before learning what it’s like to care for our ambassador animals during tours led by aquarium staff. Participants will gain access to areas not typically open to the public. Animal feeding might also be part of the tour.     \n\n\n\nRegistration is required for all participants ages 3 and up and includes admission to the UGA Aquarium. All ages are welcome\, but children under 18 must be accompanied by a registered adult. SUMMARY:Discovering Your Backyard Marsh
DESCRIPTION:Georgia has an estimated 378\,000 acres of salt marsh\, one of the most extensive and productive habitats of its type in the U.S. that serve as the primary nursery for many species of fish\, crabs\, shrimps\, and the birds that feed on them. The salt marsh provides storm protection\, opportunities for recreation and improves water quality\, but is also under threat due to sea level rise. The South Atlantic Salt Marsh Initiative brings together partners from North Carolina to Florida to identify strategies for sustaining one million acres of salt marsh across the four-state region\, with Georgia’s marshes at its heart. Join Dr. Michelle Covi\, marsh ecologist and 2026 chair of the SASMI Partnership Council\, to learn more about the salt marsh in our own backyard and the work underway to protect and restore this vital habitat. \n\n\n\nThis program takes place at the UGA Aquarium on Skidaway Island\, where we’ll begin with an overview of the South Atlantic Salt Marsh Initiative. After the presentation\, we’ll head out to the Jay Wolf Nature Trail to discover the marsh up close\, viewing the plant and animal inhabitants that make up this ecosystem. Bring clothes and shoes that can get muddy\, along with your sense of wonder and adventure! \n\n\n\nRegistration is required for participants ages 3 and up and includes admission to the UGA Aquarium. Content is best suited for ages 13 and up\, but all ages are welcome. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a registered adult. Tickets are nonrefundable.

SUMMARY:Rethinking Runoff in Brunswick
DESCRIPTION:Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant is teaming up with the City of Brunswick and Keep Golden Isles Beautiful to launch the Love Where You Live campaign\, designed to encourage residents to get involved in caring for green spaces that mitigate flooding and protect water quality in local neighborhoods. \n\n\n\nAs part of the campaign\, kiosks have been placed in public areas where green infrastructure projects have been installed to help filter and clean stormwater before it reaches our marshes. The kiosks include grab-and-go supplies\, like trash bags and gloves\, that people can use to help remove litter before it becomes pollution! \n\n\n\nTogether\, we can keep Brunswick beautiful. \n\n\n\nIf you are interested in learning more about this project\, join us at the Roosevelt Harris\, Jr. Senior Citizens Center to learn about green infrastructure and how you can give back to your community! \n\n\n\nThis program is best suited for adults\, but all ages are welcome. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEver wondered what goes on behind the scenes at the UGA Aquarium? You’re in luck! Spend the afternoon exploring our exhibits before learning what it’s like to care for our ambassador animals during tours led by aquarium staff. Participants will gain access to areas not typically open to the public. Animal feeding might also be part of the tour.     \n\n\n\nRegistration is required for all participants ages 3 and up and includes admission to the UGA Aquarium. All ages are welcome\, but children under 18 must be accompanied by a registered adult. DESCRIPTION:This hands-on program takes you behind the scenes of oyster research and offers an up-close look at how these incredible animals shape our coast.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll begin with a guided tour of the UGA Shellfish Research Lab\, where you’ll see how oyster seed is spawned and grown for local farmers. Then\, head to the plankton lab at the UGA Aquarium for a hands-on oyster dissection. An educator will guide you through the oyster’s anatomy\, showing how its filtering system works\, and you’ll even create a wet mount to view under the microscope. Join us for a rare\, magnified glimpse at this fanatic filter feeder in action!   \n\n\n\nRegistration is required for participants ages 3 and up\, and includes admission to the UGA Aquarium. This program is best suited for children ages 10 and up\, but all ages are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an Ocean to Table program focused on Georgia grown clams! These shellfish are delicious\, nutritious\, and sustainably grown in Georgia’s coastal estuaries. During this hands-on program at our Brunswick office\, you’ll learn about clam biology\, seafood safety and nutrition from Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant experts. You will also be able to engage in conversation with local shellfish farmers from Shellbluff Clams\, who raise northern hard clams near Sapelo Island. Shellbluff Clams is committed to growing seafood that gives back to the local ecosystem and community. The program will wrap up with a cooking demonstration and tasting of a recipe made with Shellbluff Clams’ freshly harvested shellfish.     \n\n\n\nRegistration is required. Tickets are nonrefundable.

DESCRIPTION:Step into the world of archaeology with this family-friendly program that brings Skidaway Island’s history to life. Guided by a marine educator\, participants will discover coastal cultures of the past through artifacts uncovered during a recent UGA archaeological study.  \n\n\n\nTogether\, we’ll examine pottery fragments left behind by the island’s early inhabitants\, sort pieces from a teaching collection\, and create our own clay pots using simple\, traditional techniques. After the hands-on activities\, we’ll take a short\, easy walk through the maritime forest and along the salt marsh in areas once used by the Guale people and still vital to coastal life today.  \n\n\n\nRegistration is required for participants ages 3 and up and includes admission to the UGA Aquarium.
