UGA Marine Extension has held summer marine science camps for the public since 1992. This summer, the Island Scientist session for children ages 13-14 featured presentations and hands-on activities with coastal researchers.

Jeb Byers, a professor at UGA’s Odom School of Ecology, shared a shark capture and tagging video gathered earlier that week in Wassaw Sound. Marc Frischer of the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography presented an overview of black gill in shrimp, and Ashleigh Price led the students in a pilot activity that simulate survivorship trends in shrimp affected by black gill.

Rob Hein with the Shellfish Research Laboratory led students on a tour of the new oyster hatchery and showed them how to measure and classify young oysters living in the Skidaway river upweller.
