On January 27, the University of Georgia Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant held its annual meeting at the UGA Aquarium on Skidaway Island. The event began with an opening from Director Mark Risse followed by staff introductions and highlights from the past year.

There was a moment of celebration for accomplishments both large and small: from successful events, such as fixing up the R/V Sea Dawg after it was damaged by a lightning storm to the opening of Georgia’s first Oyster Hatchery. Kelly Simmons, director of communications for UGA Public Service and Outreach, provided training to staff on how to share their research and communicate with the press.

John “Crawfish” Crawford prepared the “Skimmer” just before leaving the dock.

Staff members were also able to participate in a tour of the new UGA Oyster Hatchery led by Tom Bliss and Justin Manley. They additionally explored the Skidaway River to Wassaw Sound in skiffs, or small boats. While touring the Skidaway and Wilmington rivers, staff members spotted dolphins and a variety of birds.

It was a successful meeting and an excellent start to the New Year for University of Georgia Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant.
