10,000 oyster bags were used for the living shoreline. Most of the oyster shell, approximately 8,000 bags, was purchased from shucking houses in Florida and North Carolina while the remaining 2,000 bags were provided by Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant’s shell recycling program.

625 smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) plants were planted. This is the dominant marsh grass along the Georgia coast.
These plants have strong root systems that help hold sediment in place.

As part of 4H education programming, over 7,000 guests see the living shoreline each year and learn about how it was built and the environmental and human benefits it provides.

The Burton 4H Center living shoreline was the first to use Flexamat in its construction. A 16-foot section of the material was placed under a layer or bagged shell to see if the product reduced the amount of oyster shell required.

The living shoreline was needed in response to erosion in the creek that was moving the bank towards the back of the Burton 4-H buildings. Existing infrastructure, like buried water lines, had become exposed due to the erosion.
Today, most of the oyster bags deployed during the installation have disappeared and are covered by an established oyster reef.

In 2017, roughly 25 volunteers, including high school students, planted 160 native plants along the shoreline, including yaupon holly, muhly grass and other types of coastal plants.
Over the course of the entire project, 250 volunteers were engaged in shell bagging and planting events.
