Darien event: Oral history of commercial fishing in Georgia

February 1, 2019, 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Over 30 local commercial fishermen shared their stories of life on the water, opinions on the state of the fishing industry, and predictions for the future of commercial fishing in Georgia as part of a 2018 anthropology research project on the state and fate of Georgia’s fishing industry.

Join us for a FREE presentation on Feb. 1 in Darien, Georgia, to learn about the results of this local fisheries knowledge project and hear participants’ perspectives on the state and fate of Georgia’s commercial fishing industry.

Capturing the life stories and experiences of Georgia’s commercial fishermen through oral history interviews provides an invaluable historic and current database of knowledge that can be useful to science as well as local community history. This project was led by researchers at Georgia Southern University with support from UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant.
