Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant is working with communities to be a solution to stormwater pollution on the coast.

Land use changes across Georgia can increase stormwater runoff, carrying pollutants that degrade water quality and threaten the health of our waterways. Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant’s stormwater program uses science-based solutions to reduce runoff, mitigate flooding and protect water quality in coastal communities.

We implement low-impact development and green infrastructure practices that mimic natural processes and help restore the water cycle. Rain gardens, bioswales and permeable pavement reduce sediment, nutrients, pathogens and other pollutants. By promoting infiltration of rainwater and runoff into the soil, these practices also reduce flooding.

Our stormwater program serves as a top resource for coastal communities. We work with city planners, water resource professionals, and decision-makers to design, implement, and monitor effective stormwater management practices. Through training, technical assistance and outreach, we are building capacity for long-term stormwater management along the coast.

Green Infrastructure Project at Howard Coffin Park

Howard Coffin Park is home to Brunswick’s first bioretention cell, serving as both a case study and educational demonstration site. Designed to capture runoff from the soccer fields, the bioretention cell uses layers of sandy soil, mulch and stone to filter out pesticides, fertilizers and other pollutants before they reach the nearby tidal creek. The project has helped build local capacity for implementing and maintaining green infrastructure through collaboration with municipal staff, community partners and state agencies.

Adaptive Stormwater Management Plan for Hinesville, Georgia

Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant worked in collaboration with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Coastal Resources Division to create a sustainable, innovative and cost-effective stormwater management plan by identifying stormwater green infrastructure opportunities in the city of Hinesville. The plan will serve as a guide to begin implementing green infrastructure practices and allow the local community to more effectively manage stormwater runoff.

Brunswick Rethinking Runoff Plan

Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant worked with the City of Brunswick and Goodwyn Mills Cawood, LLC to create a green infrastructure plan that will mitigate flooding and improve water quality. The plan identifies 28 sites in Brunswick that would benefit from green infrastructure practices. It provides fundamental information for planning and future implementation.

Resources

Rain Garden Program

Launched in 2019, the Coastal Georgia Rain Garden Program promotes the installation of rain gardens in coastal communities. A variety of resources are available to help residents and small businesses with the design, installation and maintenance of rain gardens.

Maintenance Resources for Professionals

Inspectors and maintenance staff can access stormwater operation, inspection and maintenance tools for green infrastructure practices in coastal Georgia. These tools include an informational video, inspection checklists featuring photos that illustrate varying levels of performance, and fact sheets on the most common stormwater green infrastructure practices used in coastal Georgia.

Coastal Georgia LID Inventory

The Coastal Low Impact Development Inventory features 308 green infrastructure practices in Georgia’s eleven coastal counties. The inventory serves as a tool for understanding how green infrastructure functions in coastal environments and is designed as a resource for practitioners, educators and stormwater advocates to support informed decision-making and planning across the region.
