Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant supports Georgia’s seafood industry by offering technical training, partnering on applied research and sharing regulatory updates. Our seafood program works to create a network of commercial fishers, aquaculture producers, processors, retailers, and other stakeholders to address industry and consumer needs and support innovation across the seafood sector. 

Connecting with Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant provides access to professionals who can help answer processing questions and address emerging needs.

Georgia is well positioned for aquaculture expansion, with strong agriculture, infrastructure, and access to markets. The UGA Aquaculture Working Group brings together faculty and staff to advance sustainable aquaculture development and identify priority freshwater and marine opportunities, helping position Georgia as a leader in the field.

Oyster Farming

Oyster Aquaculture is a growing industry along the state’s coast. Commercial growers cultivate oysters using floating cages and other gear to produce high-quality single oysters for the half-shell restaurant and consumer market. The Shellfish Research Lab supplies oyster spat and technical support to growers and helps expand sustainable oyster aquaculture in Georgia.<!– wp:html –>

The Safe Oysters website is designed to be an educational resource for health care providers, food and health educators, consumers, fishermen and commercial processors who want to learn about and prevent Vibrio vulnificus infections.

This online directory helps Georgia consumers, retailers, and businesses find and connect with local seafood companies. Featuring retail and wholesale businesses, the directory is a free voluntary listing designed to expand market opportunities for Georgia seafood.

Other Industry Trainings

  • Commercial Fishing Drill Conductor Training is a U.S. Coast Guard-accepted marine safety training course for captains and crew serving on any commercial vessel, held in collaboration with Alaska Marine Safety Education Association. The courses provide practical information on the survival equipment found on most commercial vessels and on conducting emergency onboard drills. Skills are learned in a hands-on format, and the training also has an in-the-water, skills practice session. Topics address cold-water survival skills; EPIRBs, signal flares, and mayday calls; man-overboard recovery and firefighting; flooding, damage control, and dewatering pumps; immersion suits and PFDs, helicopter rescue, life rafts, abandon ship procedures, and emergency drills.

  • Fishermen First Aid and Safety Training (FFAST) is a comprehensive program designed to equip fishermen with essential skills for first aid, CPR and emergency response with an emphasis on commercial fishing operations. The training includes hands-on exercises and real world scenarios to ensure participants are prepared to handle emergencies on their vessels safely.
