Explore marine science at Skidaway Marine Science Day, a free, family-friendly event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the University of Georgia Skidaway Marine Science Campus on the north end of Skidaway Island.
The annual event brings science to life through hands-on experiences and behind-the-scenes activities. The UGA Aquarium will be open with free admission, featuring behind-the-scenes tours, live reptile encounters and lab demonstrations.
On the bluff behind the aquarium, environmental organizations and coastal researchers will host interactive exhibits that encourage visitors to explore Georgia’s coastal ecosystems and marine life up close. The Jay Wolf Nature Trail will be open for hiking and observing nature.
Researchers at the UGA Skidaway Institute of Oceanography will share current research, including the use of satellites to detect ocean color, the impacts of marine debris and how to prevent it, and demonstrations of how nature helps buffer pollutants from entering waterways.
At the UGA Shellfish Research Lab, visitors will learn how single oysters are grown for the aquaculture industry and discover the ecological and economic benefits of oyster reef restoration.
The event will also feature tours of Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary’s R/V Gannet, a 52-foot vessel commissioned in 2023 that supports scientific research, diving operations and public education.
All activities are free, and food will be available for purchase.
“We love this event because gives people a chance to meet the scientists, educators and partners working to understand and protect Georgia’s coast,” said Shannon Matzke, public program coordinator for Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant. “We hope visitors leave with a greater understanding of local marine science and feel inspired to study, protect and steward the environment.”
The campus-wide open house is presented by UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant, UGA Skidaway Institute of Oceanography and NOAA’s Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary.
